Sweet Spirit: Granted March 01, 2002

The Story of Sweet Spirit

Last Updated: March 01, 2002

She was found by the side of the road in Carson, CA by Animal Control officers. This purebred Pembroke Welsh Corgi was unable to walk. She had been abandoned, or she had crawled away from home to die. What was her name? Where did she come from? How did she get to be left by the side of the road?
Nobody knows. We'll probably never know. The shelter where she was taken named her Sweet Spirit because of her temperment. They estimated that she was between 7 and 9 years old. Sweet Spirit had a huge tumor on her abdomen. Affordable Vet in Torrance, CA donated a mammary removal surgery for that tumor, and the shelter workers took her back to the shelter...after all, Sweet Spirit was a stray. She had real difficulty in walking and was in obvious pain, but she was given only cage rest in the shelter.
CorgiRescue list member Arleen Rooney rescued her from the shelter and took her to her own vet, Dr. Kumar. Dr. Kumar found multiple internal and external tumors on Sweet Spirit, and biopsied them to see if they were cancerous, but Sweet Spirit's luck held. No cancer. The tumors and cysts were removed. Arleen says, "She is recuperating nicely and is acting like a puppy instead of a 7+ to 9 year old. One more cyst to remove on her back, and get all her other many stitches removed from all over and she'll be ready to be adopted!" The vet bill was over $800, paid by CorgiAid from donations collected from dog lovers everywhere.
